A typical but very special ocean front balcony
Project : Batter Kay Architects Del Mar, CA
Scope: a lightweight dirable interlocking deck tile system for the waterproof membrane decks
When the homeowners in this bluff side Del Mar Oceanfront home purchased this brand new build they were left with what is often the case in a new home an ugly yet new waterproofed balcony surface in this case a liquid poured hardened membrane. What you end up with is a dirty surface that in not pleasant to walk on. They contacted us for a solution of which we almost always recommend the warmth of wood specifically our interlocking deck tiles. In this case our ipe deck tiles were used to cover this surface, still allowing for drainage but giving the homeowners the look and feel of an ocean front sailboat deck, in fact these tiles feel like you are on the deck of a boat. The deck tiles were cut and snapped together quickly to dramatically transform this space off the master bedroom to create an amazing balcony. A one of kind surface for a special custom home. The homeowners were thrilled yet skeptical the surface would remain this comfortable to walk on for a long period of time or woudl even last more than a few years. Here we are almost 22 years later and although the wood has aged to a distinguished silver grey, the look is perfect and compliments the grey stucco which is one of the timeless features of the home.
